To center the collar opening with the hole in the leg I mostly just eye-balled it from above while making a few marks at the extents. First up is a sturdy leg vise built from a single 2x8 board a vise screw and a linear bearing and shaft. It s plenty strong relatively cheap and turns easily.

Woodworking After completing the main workbench it was time to add a couple of vises. The VX 20 Leg Vise is a versatile economical patented quick action vise mechanism that may be used as a leg vise or can also be made into a quick action face vise or be used just as you would use a conventional vise screw and nut. You want something thick enough that it will not deflect long enough that you can use a lot of leverage on it and wide enough to clamp larger pieces. The leg vise is not only functionally excellent but also aesthetically pleasing. French leg vise hardware of this type is typically made entirely of metal whereas hardware from Britain and America usually features a screw with a T-shaped iron casting through which a sliding wooden handle passes. This also means you can build the vise in your own style using wood of your own choosing. There are two basic types of bench vise the front vise and the end vise.

We highly recommend that you NOT begin installation without all vise hardware in your possession.

We designed ours around the French model for better function and looks. Build a Workbench Leg Vise. For this leg vise I decided to go with a Yost 18 Vise Screw. The chop is the jaw of the vice that will clamp the work to the bench leg. I developed a new leg vise that uses a type one lever instead of the old type three lever design that has been around for hundreds of years . I mounted the vise-screw s collar to the rear of the leg using four 3 14 screws. Leg vises are also simpler and easier to maintain than iron vises. It raises your workpiece so it s closer to eye level - great for detail work.
