3 SAFE SYSTEMS OF WORK Safety relies on a combination of the use of guards protection devices and protection appliances industry has its own HSE Approved Code of Practice L114 Safe Use of Woodworking Machinery . Woodworking The code of practice will apply to all woodworking machinery except for hand held portable machines used at all types of workplaces in the Island. For guidance on machinery with the exception of woodworking the approved code of practice Safety in the Use of Machinery ACoP 10 is available to download on the page working safely with machinery . With the exception of hand held portable machines ACoP 9 applies to woodworking machinery used in all working environments. The basic principles will also apply to other intrinsically hazardous engineering machinery such as lathes and milling machines. Safeguarding the machines Manufacturers must ensure that new machines are constructed to all relevant harmonised standards in accordance with the Supply of Machinery Safety Regulations 2008. The Code represents the standard to which all members have committed themselves to achieving. It sets out the principles of good practice for a woodworking or joinery business.

The Code applies to all woodworking machinery other than hand held machines used in workplaces including carpentry and joinery workshops and on construction sites. This Approved Code of Practice and guidance is aimed at employers dutyholders and anyone who has responsibility for the safe use of woodworking machinery such as managers and supervisors. This Approved Code of Practice Safety in the Use of Machinery ACoP 10 provides practical guidance and advice on the safe use of machinery in the workplace with the exception of woodworking machinery which is covered by The Safe Use of Woodworking Machinery ACoP 9.
